The therapy of the diseased gums is called periodontics. The most common form is gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). If the gingivitis is detected in good time, it can still be treated relatively easily. If left untreated, the inflammation can migrate down to the root of the tooth. This attacks the jawbone and creates a deep gum pocket. In this case one speaks of periodontitis, which can lead to loosening of the teeth.

What are the causes? How do you recognize periodontal disease?
Gum diseases are mainly caused by bacterial infections as well as leaky fillings or crown margins. If the oral hygiene is inadequate, plaque accumulates between the tooth and the gums. They later form a hard coating (tartar) which can lead to inflammation of the gums.

This form of periodontitis can be recognized by the fact that the gums bleed when you brush your teeth, dental care is sometimes painful and the gum area is dark red in color.

Cleaning at home with a toothbrush is often not enough for perfect oral hygiene. Periodontitis can, however, be treated effectively or prevented with regular professional oral hygiene treatment. An operative procedure is only very rarely required.
